Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Carry out a treatment program for assigned patients as directed by the Occupational Therapist. Under supervision, administer modalities and interventions such as exercise, massage, fluidotherapy, hot packs, ultrasound, paraffin, cryotherapy, etc. The Occupational Therapist Assistant works with patients with neurological, general medical, post- surgical and orthopedic disorders.
  • Observe patients during treatments and compile and evaluate data on patients' responses to treatments and progress and report orally or in writing to the Occupational Therapist.
  • Fit patients for, adjust, and train patients in the use and care of pre-fabricated orthopedic braces, prostheses, and supportive devices. Fabricate custom orthotic devices for patients and train them in the use of such devices.
  • Confer with members of the Occupational Therapy staff and other health team members, individually and in conference, to exchange, discuss, and evaluate patient information for planning, modifying, and coordinating treatment programs. Coordinate with other departments and the clinic staff to provide complete care to patients in an inter-disciplinary manner.
  • Provide required services within the rules and regulations of the Texas State board of Occupational Therapy.
  • Perform all duties in such a manner that they meet all Joint Commission (JC) standards.
  • Educate patients, families or healthcare professionals in the rationale and techniques for the prescribed Occupational Therapy treatment program.
  • Assist in conducting in-service educational programs for peers, subordinates, other healthcare providers and members of the military and civilian communities.
  • Possess the ability to work independently with minimal supervision in an acute care setting. Recognize the requirement when an OTR level re-evaluation is necessary, and notify the Occupational Therapist supervisor of the situation.
  • Possess knowledge of behavioral diagnoses and associated interventions. Posses knowledge of neurological deficits and impairments and associated interventions. Posses knowledge of orthopedic injuries and associated interventions.
  • Establish and maintain full competency with the treatment procedures and exercise programs utilized in the section of assignment.
  • Complete and finalize assigned opening /closing clinical task according to established procedures. These may include but are not limited to end of the day close out in appointment systems, patient data collection, maintaining supplies, equipment, linen and performing infection control procedures.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one (1) years’ experience as an Occupational Therapy Assistant after graduation. Experience in an inpatient acute care setting is highly preferred.
  • Experience and training in Orthopedic/Sports Medicine, Poly-trauma, Oncological, Geriatric, and Neurological patients.

Education:

  • Associates Degree for Occupational Therapy Assistant. Graduate from a college or university accredited at the time of graduation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

License/Certification:

  • Must possess a current, full, and active license by the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners (TBPTE) and Occupational Therapy Examiners and can provide physical therapy in Texas
  • Certified through the National Board of Certified Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with amputee, burn and limb salvage
